  • 1. What is counseling/therapy?
Counseling, therapy, or seeing a clinician involves working with a professional to explore emotional and psychological challenges. At Key2Happiness, we often use the terms "counselor," "therapist," and "clinician" interchangeably, although there are some differences. Clinicians are educated and experienced in providing therapeutic services, while therapists typically hold degrees in Social Work and counselors in Mental Health Counseling. During counseling, you'll discuss issues with a non-judgmental, objective listener who helps you view challenges differently and develop effective solutions. Counseling is a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together to improve communication, self-esteem, and coping skills to enhance your overall well-being.
  • 2. Does counseling really work?
Yes! Numerous studies have shown that counseling is highly effective, especially for those who actively engage in the process. Counseling can help you improve your emotional and mental well-being, offering long-lasting benefits when actively embraced.
  • 3. Do I really need counseling?
If you're struggling with emotional or mental health issues, experiencing relationship problems, or just feeling down and overwhelmed, counseling can help. While therapy can feel like a big step, it is almost always beneficial for those ready to grow and improve the quality of their lives. Just like visits to your regular doctor support your physical health, counseling provides support to help you achieve personal growth and improve your mental health.
  • 4. What makes therapy successful?
The success of therapy largely depends on you. Therapy is a personal journey where openness to the process is key. If you’re willing to put in the effort, explore your emotions, and work toward change, counseling can be a transformative experience.
  • 5. What is the therapeutic process?
The therapeutic process begins with an initial session where the therapist gathers information about your background, family history, and current struggles. Based on this, they create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Therapy is dynamic, with goals adjusted over time as progress is made. Your therapist will build trust and provide a safe space for you to share, using various techniques to help you discover more about yourself and develop life skills.
  • 6. What happens during a therapy session?
Counseling sessions are designed to provide a relaxing, supportive environment. Your therapist will guide the conversation, often beginning by asking what’s been on your mind or what you’d like to discuss. Each session is a collaborative problem-solving opportunity, and your therapist may engage you in activities like life-timeline exercises or mindfulness techniques. Homework assignments may be provided to help you apply new skills in real life.
  • 7. How do I know if counseling is for me?
If you’re unsure whether counseling is right for you, here are some signs that professional support might be beneficial: You're experiencing emotional difficulties such as sadness, anxiety, or anger. You're having relationship issues. You have difficulty sleeping or concentrating. You have experienced a recent traumatic event or loss. You have unresolved trauma from the past. You have concerns about substance use. You're having suicidal thoughts. You are struggling with daily life. Talking to a counselor can help address these concerns and improve your overall well-being.
  • 8. Are counseling sessions confidential?
Yes! Confidentiality is a cornerstone of counseling at Key2Happiness. Information shared during sessions remains private unless you provide explicit consent for disclosure. There are a few exceptions, such as in cases where there is a danger to yourself or others, suspicion of abuse, or a court order. In such rare circumstances, your counselor will discuss any necessary disclosures with you. If you are under 18, your parents may have access to your records.
